menu_open Setting up Gmail
To set up Gmail for sending transactional emails, it’s important to consider the scale you need. Gmail is a great choice for smaller audiences or occasional email sending, such as sending updates to a personal trainer, coach, or educator group.
Prerequisites
Before using SendStreak to send emails through Gmail, you’ll need to prepare your Gmail account to allow sending emails using the SMTP protocol.
Here are the steps to get started:
Gmail
- If you plan to use your personal (free) Gmail account, you’re likely already set up. However, if you want to use a Google Workspace account, you may need to create a dedicated account for it.
- Once your account is ready, create an app password to allow third-party services like SendStreak to connect to Gmail’s SMTP server and send emails on your behalf. To create the app password, navigate to your Google Account page, go to Security, and click on App passwords. Select “Other” from the app dropdown and enter “SendStreak” as the name.
- Click “Generate” and make sure to save the generated app password as it will only be shown once.
SendStreak
With Gmail set up, you can now proceed to set up SendStreak. Sign up for an account if you haven’t already.
- Go to the Settings -> Email servers menu and click Create new, or use this link if you’re already logged in to SendStreak.
- Enter the appropriate details:
- Host: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- User: your full Gmail email address
- Password: the app password you generated previously
- Make sure to leave the “Use SSL” option off and turn on the “Use STARTTLS” option.
- Click “Save” and you’re done!
Limitations
Keep in mind that Gmail has some limitations for transactional email sending. The email sending limit through SMTP is 100 emails per day, which aligns with the email credits included in SendStreak’s free tier. This means that sending transactional emails with Gmail and SendStreak is completely free.
However, it’s important to note that Gmail doesn’t support reply paths, so bounce reporting functionality won’t be available through SendStreak. For more details on sending emails through Gmail’s SMTP server, you can read the documentation linked here.
